What bugs come out in the winter in Florida?

Although many bugs come out in the winter in Florida, they are not as active as they might be in the warmer months. Because Florida’s winters are mild, most bugs don’t die off or go into hibernation but rather, they go dormant at temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This means they cannot move around well and do not reproduce during cooler weather with less sunlight.

What bugs come out in the winter in Florida?

Florida’s temperatures stay relatively warm during the winter, so some bugs, such as ants, termites, roaches, and silverfish, can be more active in your home in the winter.

  • Subterranean Termites
Subterranean termites live in the ground outside your home, burrowing through mud tunnels they construct to transport the wood in your home to the throngs of hungry termites in their million-plus colonies. Subterranean termites need to live underground because they cannot tolerate the heat in Florida above the ground surface. In the winter, when temperatures drop, subterranean termites are still active but they just burrow deeper in the ground to stabilize their body temperature.
  • Roaches
While you may not notice as many roaches in your home during the winter, like other insects, they are still there but roaches are less active during cooler months, with reduced sunlight hours. Roaches tend to lay low in dark, moist places, such as cardboard boxes stored near water sources in your attic, garage or shed.
  • Ants
In Florida, it seems like ants come out year-round and are almost impossible to get rid of. Many ant species call Florida home but thankfully, they are a nuisance pest for the most part.
  • Silverfish
Although surprising to many, silverfish can be quite destructive and typically come out in Florida during the winter months. They are attracted to paper and damp clothing so dark, damp areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, attics, etc. are their favorite places to be.
  • Rodents
Rats and mice may go undetected for a while because they tend to be more active in the evenings. Because they can enter homes through holes as small as a nickel, it’s important to check for any cracks or crevices around your property. They are most associated with chewing through wiring in the walls of homes which can lead to electrical fires.
  • Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are often detected once there is an infestation in the home’s upholstered surfaces including mattresses, couches, and even carpeted areas. They are notoriously difficult to eliminate with DIY methods. With all the travel commonly associated with the winter, because of holidays, bed bugs tend to make their way around.
