What Are The Termites In southwestern Florida?

There are two main types of termites that inflict damage on the homes and businesses of southwestern Florida. These two types of termites live in different habitats, want different things, and must be controlled in different ways. They are:

Subterranean Termites

Subterranean TermitesSubterranean termites belong to the Rhinotermitidae family. They’re usually around ⅛” long and either a dark brown or creamy off-white color. The common name “subterranean” refers to the fact that these termites live in large underground colonies. They connect these colonies to their wood food sources by distinctive above-ground tunnels called “mud tubes.” Subterranean termites require moisture to remain active, so they’re attracted to humidity and moist wood. Subterranean termites are the most common and destructive termites in Florida.

Formosan Termites and Asian Termites are two invasive species of subterranean termite that have become 30% more prevalent in Southwest Florida in the last 5 years. Both of these subterranean species are extremely destructive because they build enormous colonies containing millions of termites. These large colonies can even form carton nests in structures above ground. The treatment approach is the same for both Formosan and Asian termites. High level infestations may require the Sentricon Colony Elimination System along with liquid applications. Tent fumigation may be required to eliminate above-ground carton nests in some cases.

Drywood Termites

Drywood termites belong to the Kalotermitidae family. They’re between ⅜ to 1 inch long and appear white, off-white, or light brown in color. Drywood termites establish colonies directly inside their wooden food sources by carving living chambers as they eat. They tend to burrow deep inside dry woods in secluded areas, which can make them difficult for non-experts to find. Drywood termite colonies are smaller than subterranean colonies, but drywood termites can still inflict significant damage.

How Does Pestwise Control Termites In Clearwater?

Different termite infestations require different solutions. The right termite control must account for both your particular termite species and your home or businesses’ unique considerations. Pestwise offers three different treatment options for your Clearwater home to control your termite infestation in the most effective manner possible. These methods are:

Liquid Treatments (for Subterranean Termites)

Depending on the type of structure and location of the termite infestation a liquid treatment may be preferred for some structures. A non-repellent liquid product is applied to the soil along the foundation of the entire structure. Termites traverse the undetectable treatment zone and transfer the product throughout the colony, eliminating the infestation. The liquid product lasts for years after it’s applied, which means it will continue to protect the structure from future infestations.

Tent Fumigation (for Drywood Termites)

Pestwise's termite technicians are licensed structural fumigation specialists. Tenting structural fumigation is the best way to eliminate drywood termites because it can reach even the deepest recesses of wood where drywood termites tend to establish themselves. Fumigation eliminates the entire infestation at once, which keeps your termites from re-establishing themselves after treatment. Pestwise's experts follow a tried-and-true quality assurance process to make sure that our fumigation always works right the first time.

No-Tent Fumigation (for Drywood Termites)

f you cannot or choose not to use fumigation to treat drywood termites, then having a reliable inspection team becomes even more important. Pestwise’s experienced, professional technicians perform thorough inspections and utilize termite detection technologies such as the Termatrac device to locate and isolate termite activity. These inspections allow us to locate the sources of your termite infestation and eliminate them reliably.
